Starmer and Macron in shock: they did not anticipate the quick Israeli reaction to their announcements
Against the backdrop of European countries' recognition of a Palestinian state, the Ministry of Transportation is launching the Orange Line: a new BRT line, which will connect the terminal in Samaria to Petah Tikva. The line will serve about 10,000 passengers a day and will connect to the light rail and the metro
The diplomatic arena shook on Sunday after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer made good on his threat to Israel and officially recognized his state's name as a Palestinian state. This is part of a broader process initiated by French President Emmanuel Macron and, as we saw yesterday, created a huge storm in the political system.
One of the steps that is feared in the Arab world and in Europe is the expansion of Israeli settlement in Judea and Samaria, following the decision. Against the background of this concern, it seems that Israel has been waiting for the right time to launch the "Orange Line" for Samaria, and yesterday, when the Europeans were busy with the announcements, the Ministry of Transport and Road Safety, through the Ayalon Highway Company, announced the implementation of an unprecedented transportation revolution in Samaria with the launch of the "Orange Line – Passenger Intensive Transportation System (BRT), which will provide residents with a fast, reliable and convenient alternative to private cars."
The Ministry of Transportation says that "the Orange Line, which will connect Gush Dan to Samaria, and is about 30 kilometers long, will be a central part of an advanced mass transit network, which includes the lines to Rehelim, Rosh Ha'Ayin, Kfar Qasim and the employment areas in Petah Tikva. In part of the route, additional lines in the system will travel on the infrastructure, for maximum connectivity. During the day of operation, about 10,000 passengers are expected to travel on the line. The reliability and efficiency of the line will enable a smooth transition to high-quality and fast public transportation, and will strengthen its use over private vehicles."
Main centers along the route: Rehelim Terminal, Ariel University, Jerusalem Street, Ariel Industrial Zone, Barkan Industrial Zone, Lev Israel Employment Park, Segula Industrial Zone and Kiryat Aryeh Employment Park. Central transportation hubs and connections to the national network: Bruchin Terminal, Kiryat Aryeh Train Station, the Red Line of the Light Rail, and the future M3 metro station.
The route of the line according to main streets and arteries: Rehelim Terminal - Road 4775 (Jerusalem Street) - Road 5 - Even HaEzer Interchange - HaDekalim - Ariel Sharon Road - Road 444 - Road 483 - Road 40, Em HaMoshavot Road - Kiryat Aryeh Railway Terminal. As part of the project, complementary infrastructures will also be developed, including continuous bicycle paths and wide, accessible sidewalks, and the public space will be upgraded with trees and natural shade, for a comfortable and safe user experience.
Minister of Transportation and Road Safety Miri Regev said with excitement: "We continue to connect Samaria to the heart of the State of Israel through advanced, accessible and efficient public transportation systems. The Orange Line will change the transportation reality in the area, provide residents with a quick alternative to private cars, and optimally connect them to employment, education, and leisure centers. This is another important step on the road to transportation justice and strengthening the settlements."
The head of the Samaria Regional Council, Yossi Dagan, said on the subject: "Minister Regev, about you, they say blessed you say and do. Today we are making history: Samaria joins the Metronit network – Israel's mass transportation. For almost 5 years we have been working hard to bring the train to Samaria - and at a good time we are reaching this exciting moment of historic beginning. This is a move that will connect Rehelim, Ariel, Rosh Ha'Ayin and Tel Aviv, strengthen the settlements and turn Samaria into an inseparable part of the center of the country. Together with the road revolution, we are moving forward together towards the goal: a million residents in Samaria."
Ariel Mayor Yair Shatbon commented on the move, saying, "We are not waiting for the official decision on sovereignty and are promoting it on the ground. The new line will allow quick and convenient access to Ariel residents, students and all residents of Samaria. I congratulate the Ministry of Transportation for leading the project and hope that we will soon see the start of work on the ground."
The Director General of the Ministry of Transport and Road Safety, Moshe Ben Zaken, said: "The Orange Line, the new BRT system in Samaria, brings a real message of reliable, fast and accessible service to the traveling public. The integration of dedicated transportation lanes, convenience stations, and complementary infrastructures will ensure a high-quality travel experience, which will contribute to reducing congestion on the roads and strengthening the local economy."
